Waveriders

Filed under: Movies, Surfing — paudie @ 7:32 am

Bit of a rushed decision last night, but I ended up going into town to see the Cork Premiere of Joel Conroy’s surf doc Waveriders. i’m sure most of you have heard of it by now.

I had seen the trailers and to be honest I wasn’t that impressed, compared to the stuff we get to watch on Surfline and youtube everyday the level of surfing isn’t super impressive. But there was a big crew heading in and I’ve never seen a surf movie on the big screen before.

Jaysus it rocked. I could hardly keep still the entire time. I have never wanted to go shooting more than I did while watching that movie. I’m not sure if it ’s the story, an amazing arc covering the revitalisation of surfing as a modern sport by an Irishmans son from its roots in Hawaii to the tow surfing bonanza that Ireland is these days, or just the fact that I knew a load of the faces and had been to most of the places being shown.

I was just so stoked watching it. It’s hard to get my excitement across on this page so all I can say is go see it.

It goes on release this Friday in UK and Ireland and is definitely worth checking out.

Random Blab

Right well still in recovery, the pain killers are starting wear off and I’m quite sore, so I reckon I’ll be out of the water for a good while.

I’m on twitter. http://twitter.com/paudiescanlon Not sure what ‘ll be tweeting about yet but might be useful.

Wanted to highlight a special cause as well. IRMA (the evil recording company people in Ireland) are tryingto block our access to certain sites. Fair enough they are trying to protect their goods but it should be up to us what sites we visit, if this goes through it would set a dangerous precedent for blocking whatever the hell they wanted. For more info go to http://www.blackoutireland.com/

And finally to get back to some kind of surfing theme, the trailer for Lowe-Smiths new movie is out.

Check it.

Non-Surfing Fun

Filed under: Kids are silly, Movies — paudie @ 9:52 pm

Hey all, I have been not surfing or shooting for the past week, but that doesn’t mean an end to fun times.

First off is some reminiscing with Zig & Zag, I’m definitely getting the DVD.

Here’s the video to Them Girls, and something I hadn’t seen before Zig & Zag covering The Beasties Boy’s  Sabotage as Elvis. There’s loads more stuff on youtube.

The there is the new Star Trek trailer to get excited about, it looks bloody awesome.

In more movie news we watched Zack and Miri Make a Porno the other night, way over the top with ridiculously crude language and crazy amounts of boobs and balls, but kinda funny. I guess I just like Kevin Smith’s stuff anyway.

Hopefully will get around to sticking some shots up before the end of the week.

Thanks to everyone who’s been in touch about the magazine. Cheers.

Bring on the Weekend

Ok so it’s looking might windy, but Ireland has enough bendy coastline that there should be somewhere working.

Hope you find waves, no shots with me today so here’s a video of Cain. Apparently he’s looking for sponsors, I suppose youtube isn’t such a bad idea then.

Regrets, I’ve had a few.

Watching Shoot ‘em Up.
What a stupid waste of money.

Seeing a nice scene but not stopping to take a photo.
Stupid Paudie, Stupid.

Not having a camera with me yesterday the nicest day all summer.

But I have it with me know and I’m thinking of trying some street photography and hopefully some more skate stuff.

Looks like a 5D MkII is on the way over at canon

Movies

Happy Feet is a strange strange movie.
I actually felt quite uncomrftable towards then end of watching it.
It’s just weird, you can’t really make out what the hell his feet are doing and the religious overtones are really out of place.

I don’t like it (said in Little Britain voice)

Yawning

Deckard would have had a much easier time if he just yawned.
Apparently the facts that dogs “catch” human yawns means they are empathising with us.

So the Voight-Kampff test was a bit over the top really.

How do you like them apples?

Simple Kid at Dolans a while back. He’s cool I like him. He even sang a duet with Kermit during this show using video projected behind him. I like when bands put a lot of work into their live shows, using visuals etc. really adds to the experience.

Saw Batman last night, flipping awesome movie. I had been doubtful of Ledgers performance, I kinda thought it was being extra hyped because of his death, but it is an amazing piece of work. The whole movie is really good and it’s such a pity that he is gone, I could happily watch him and Bale play off one another for years to come.
Also saw Wall-E last week, another brilliant film, one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema I have ever seen, which is crazy when you think that it’s a CG movie about robots. Pixar have managed to create a world that seems more real than this one and a hell of a lot prettier too. This is the future of movies.

Suspending Disbelief

Filed under: Movies, Physics — Tags: — paudie @ 12:56 pm

I like that phrase, it’s what you have to do when going to see most movies these days. Yeah sure the computer generated sand monster seems to be passing through that wall but you accept because you want to be entertained.

Because of my background in physics it takes a little bit more work for me sometimes, especially if it’s something that I think I know about. The bit that always sticks out in my mind is the scene in Armageddon on the space station where (after floating along in their spaceship) the crew are suddenly able to walk on the space station, no explanation is given for this and it just seems utterly stupid, because I know that you can’t walk normally in space.

Last night myself and my lady went to see Hancock, but it was sold out so we went to Wanted instead. I thought it was brilliant, flip your car over into a bus and drive off, sure, that’s cool. Bend bullets? Theoretically possible I guess and looks pretty damn cool as well. But there is one scene where a thick skewer is jammed into the barrel of a gun, and the person with the gun fires it and the skewer flies out.

Strangely out of all of the movie this one little bit was what annoyed me the most, surely the gun would have jammed and the recoil would have sent part of the gun into the guys head? No hang on where did I get that idea?

Oh yeah Sin City. So just because I had seen this type of scene before in a different movie I was completely prepared to disbelieve the scene in wanted. Funny that, guess I’m only capable of suspending my disbelief once per scenario.
